Have you ever seen a roof garden?

What's that?

Just what it sounds like: a garden on a roof! People have been planting them for hundreds of years. They're usually found on top of apartment buildings, but other kinds of buildings have them too.

So people just throw some dirt and grass on top of their roof and let it grow?

It's a little harder than that. Some people use soil and grass, but others use potted plants, and hydroponic roof gardens don't use soil at all.

Hydro-what?!

Hydroponics. It's a gardening method that uses nutrient solutions to help feed the plants and help them grow. No soil required!

That sounds like a lot of work. Why would anyone want to plant a garden all the way up there, anyway?

Well for starters, they give green space to people who don't have a yard or a park. They can also help keep buildings warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Plus, butterflies and birds can live there!
