Before being discovered by sailors, the Galapagos Islands were such a safe place for animals that many species grew like this short-eared owl and the famous land tortoises.

Those sailors discovered that land tortoises could be kept alive on boats for up to a year, so they took them to use as food and now they're really endangered. Darwin Station on the Galapagos protects baby turtles for about five years — until their shells are strong enough to protect them from animals like rats.
